Smoking
The consumption /intake of tobacco in the form of smoke, chewing or in any form is called smoking. Smoking includes cigarettes, bidi, surti, tambaku, kankad etc. The nicotine found in the tobacco and cigarettes is the main element to affect human health.
Cause of Smoking
- Most of the teenagers starts to smoke thinking that it is cool to smoke.
- Peer pressure of friends during adolescence age.
- Children tries to smoke by seeing their parents smoking.
- In the name of celebrating different festivals and events.
- Some of the people are influenced by the attractive advertisement in television, newspaper etc.
Effects of Smoking
Immediate Effects
- Coughs, chest pain, bad breath.
- Causes short breathing due to the contraction of alveoli in the lungs.
- Affects the heart, tongue, throat and respiratory system.
- Weakens heart by increasing the pace of heartbeat.
- Causes gastritis, indigestion, losing appetite and ulcer by affecting the digestive system.
- Causes the loss of interest and stamina.
Long-term Effects
- Causes coughing and asthma affecting the lungs.
- May cause cancer in different parts of respiratory system / the body.
- Causes intestinal and heart related diseases as well as leads to weak eye sight
- Causes severe headache and loss of memory power.
- Decreases social respect of individuals and causes deterioration of economic condition of the family.
Preventive Measures
- We should conduct public awareness campaigns against the bad effects of smoking and the use of tobacco.
- The production, distribution and consumption of tobacco / smoking should be banned.
- Farmers producing tobacco should be encouraged towards the production of other crops.
- Our children should be eyed well and kept away from the company of smokers.
Alcoholism
Alcohol is a specific term used for ethyl alcohol or ethanol. The consumption of liquid substances such as 'jaand', 'raksi', brandy, whisky, beer, etc. is called alcoholism.
Cause of Alcoholism

Effects of Alcoholisim
Immediate Effects
The major immediate effects of alcoholism are loss of body control, vomiting, breathe smelling, reddish eyes, babbling and unclear speech, quick temper, etc. Similarly, indigestion, muscular weakness, involvement of users in quarrels/ fights due to quick stimulation of alcohol in the body are other immediate effects of alcoholism.
Long –term Effects
- Consumption of alcohol destroys the sensitive organs such as lungs, liver, kidneys, etc.
- Reduces the fertility power of men and women
- Causes various diseases such as T.B.(Tuberculosis), Cancer, ulcer, etc. d. Causes trembling of limbs (hands and legs), rapid heartbeats
- Loss of social respect of individuals.
- Loss of memory
Preventive Measures of Alcoholism
- We should avoid company with the drunkards / friends having bad habit of alcohol consumption.
- The production, distribution and advertisement of wine should be banned/ prohibited.
- Public awareness programs should be conducted against alcoholism.
- The use of alcohol in various festivals/celebrations should be discouraged.
Drugs
The substances which affect human sensitivity, feelings and psychology/sentiment spoiling the ability to understand, memorize and think are called drugs. Cannabis, marijuana, bhang, dhaturo, heroin, cocaine etc. are the examples of drugs.
Drug addiction is the state in which the individuals form habit of using drugs by some reasons and cannot get rid of that habit.
Drug addict are the persons who takes drugs regularly.
The major causes of using drugs in Nepal are religious superstitions, bad company, socio-cultural rituals, modernization, influence of advertisements, imitation of the elders in the society etc.
Effects of Drug Consumption
- Lack of appetite, physical weakness, weight loss and gradual thinness.
- Constract of diseases such as Tuberculosis (TB), Jaundice, Pneumonia, etc.
- Increment of social crimes such as theft, dacoits and robbery in the society.
- Loss of social respect of individuals.
Preventive Measures of Drug Addiction
- Avoiding bad company.
- Attracting the children towards sports, reading newspapers and recreational activities during their leisure time.
- Banning/ prohibiting the advertisement of drugs.
- Organizing public awareness programs against the drugs in the society.
- Punishing the drug- traffickers according to the law.
